The European Board of Oro-Maxillo-Facial Surgery exists to enhance, through various means, OMFS standards of training and practice.
It sets out training standards and guidelines for Oro-Maxillo-Facial Surgery (also named Maxillo-Facial Surgery / Cranio-Maxillo-Facial surgery) In order to achieve this goal, the European Board of Oro-Maxillo-Facial Surgery is composed of national delegates who represent academic and non-academic professional educational bodies. In this respect, these delegates are nominated by national professional and Scientific Oro-Maxillo-Facial Associations.
One of the means to this end is the EBOMFS Assessment, which confers the title of “Fellow of the EBOMFS, head and neck surgery”. The EBOMFS RQ (Recognition of Qualification) Assessment is organized biannually since 1996. It is conducted simultaneously with the Congress of the EACMFS (European Association for Cranio-Maxillo-Facial Surgery). Almost 700 candidates from European countries have taken part.
The previous assessments were conducted in 1996 Zürich, 1998 Helsinki, 2000 Edinburgh, 2002 Münster, 2004 Tours, 2006 Barcelona, 2008 Bologna, 2010 Bruges, 2012 Dubrovnik, 2014 Prague, 2016 London, 2018 Munich and 2021 Madrid.
The scope of the Assessment has been defined by EBOMFS in the European Guidelines for Specialty Training in Oral & Maxillo–Facial Surgery. The scope includes history–taking, prevention, examination, treatment and rehabilitation of congenital and acquired pathologic conditions of the cranium, face, mouth, jaws and neck. Acquired conditions can result from disease, malformation, tumour, trauma, degeneration and ageing.
The next RQ Assessment will be held in 2022 in Madrid, Spain, September 23rd, 24th and 25th. Deadline for application is June 5th, 2022. The venue will be the Hospital Universitario Gregorio Marañon de Madrid, located in calle Ibiza, n 45.
Possible changes to Assessment arrangements
All participants, candidates and jury members are asked to regularly check the website for changes.
EBOMFS strongly advice to participate the EACMFS Congress (fully virtual).
The European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) is the oldest medical organisation in Europe.
With a current membership of 34 countries, it is the representative organisation of the National Associations of Medical Specialists in the European Union and its associated countries.
Its structure consists of a Council responsible for and working through 39 Specialist Sections and their European Boards, addressing training in their respective Specialty and incorporating representatives from academia (Societies, Colleges and Universities).
An Executive comprising the President, the Secretary-General, the Liaison Officer, and the Treasurer, is responsible for the routine functioning of the organisation.
UEMS represents over 1.6 million medical specialists in all the different specialties.
By its agreed documents, UEMS sets standards for high quality healthcare practice that are transmitted to the Authorities and Institutions of the EU and the National Medical Associations stimulating and encouraging them to implement its recommendations.

Dear Colleague,
As President of the Scientific EBOMFS Committee, I am delighted that you are taking an interest in participating to the OMFS European Board Assessment (EBOMFS).
The purpose of such an assessment is to set standards of clinical excellence in our field at a European level.
This is an opportunity to test your knowledge and be awarded a certificate of scientific recognition of your capacities as an OMF surgeon. It will enable you to interact and maintain contact with key opinion leaders of our specialty, as well as become member of the select EBOMFS club.
In order to be eligible to take the assessment, you must be a recognised OMF Surgeon in the European country where you practice, and hold a medical qualification.
I look forward hearing from you,
Kindest regards,
Henri Thuau
The European Board of Oro-Maxillo-Facial Surgery (EBOMFS) exists to harmonize and enhance OMFS standards of training and practice in Europe.
The number of Oro-Maxillo-Facial Surgery specialties working on the field of OMFS is numerous. In the Medical Directives are recognized Stomatology -, OMFS single qualified – and OMFS double qualified specialties. In addition in the Dental Directives Oral Surgery is recognized. To create a unified specialty of OMFS which is recorded only once in the Doctors Directives, it is necessary to set a goal to harmonize OMFS in Europe.
One of the means to enhance this is the European Assessments. Within UEMS, CESMA (The Council for European Specialist Medical Assessments) has been launched few years ago. All specialties who organize European Assessments are represented in this council. That means 28 EU recognized specialties out of 48 including OMFS. The goal is to harmonize the Assessment between specialties and to increase the quality control of assessment both vertically and horizontally.
The EBOMFS RQ (Recognition of Qualification) Assessment has been organized twelve times during the last 22 years, every time coinciding with Congress of EACMFS. Altogether almost 700 candidates from 16 countries have taken part in the EBOMFS Assessments during the period of 1996–2021: Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, The Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Switzerland and United Kingdom. The pass rate has been 90%.
I wish to express my gratitude to EACMFS organizing committee and EBOMFS Scientific Committee for their support to organize eighth EBOMFS RQ Assessment. Above all I wish great success to all OMFS candidates participating in the Assessment and that they attain their important goal ; – Fellow of the European Board of Oro-Maxillo-Facial Surgery (FEBOMFS) – .
Dr. Henri Thuau, President of the Scientific Committee of EBOMFS
FEBOMFS and examiners of EBOMFS
Fellow of the European Board of Oro-Maxillo-Facial Surgery
Candidates to Oral and Maxillo Facial Surgeons who have passed the RQ assesment will be issued a certificate by the EBOMFS and may use the title Fellow of the European Board of Oro-Maxillo-Facial Surgery (FEBOMFS).
