Regulations Relating to the EBOMFS – Assessment
Eligibility
Only candidates who, after review of their documents, have shown to be a recognized specialist in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and who have been recognized at the time of RQ Assessment in any of the full member countries of the UEMS can enter the Assessment.
Candidates for the R.Q.-Assessment must satisfy one of the three following terms:
- Recognized specialists in oral and maxillofacial surgery based on a medical and dental degree.
- Recognized specialists in oral and maxillofacial surgery based on a medical degree.
- Recognized specialists in oral and maxillofacial surgery based on a dental degree, provided this specialist also
holds a medical degree.
The Assessment is composed of two parts
Step 1. Curriculum vitae (CV) and Logbook, i.e. academic activity and the candidate’s record of the
operations performed personally including the last two years of specialty training.
Step 2. Multiple Choice Question exam (MCQ) and the Oral examination.
Evaluation of the CV / Logbook will be made by the EBOMFS Scientific Committee. The candidates will be informed if accepted or not for the second part at least 2 months prior to the date of the MCQ and Oral examination. Communication will be done via e-mail.
Academic Activity
The Assessment will be conducted under the following broad headings:
a) Doctoral thesis, PhD, professorship, other research and academic achievements
b) Publications in recognized national and international journals
c) Presentations at national or international meetings
d) Attendance at CME (continuing medical education) conferences and courses
Clinical Activity (Logbook)
Multiple Choice Question exam
The MCQ Exam will be conducted before the Oral examination. The assessment of MCQ will be proportional, i.e. the final points given are in relation to correct answers, The total number of MCQs is 50 + 5. One choice out of four per question is correct, no negative points. EBOMFS reserves the right to analyze statistically MCQ results and to omit a question if it is non-selective. All participants will proceed to the oral examination. Candidates not participating in the MCQ cannot take part in the oral examination.
MCQ -examination is executed in English.
Oral examination
a) Case report. Each candidate must be ready to present three well documented personal cases using
electronic presentation. The jury will select one to be presented within 15 minutes, including discussion. The candidate should bring his/ her laptop/ tablet.
b) Questions and discussion covering the whole scope of the specialty (40 minutes).
The available languages of oral examination are English, French, German or Spanish.

The MCQ examination and the Oral examination
The Examination (Part 2) of the EBOMFS RQ Assessment consists of a written (MCQ) and an Oral Examination.
Scores to pass
The candidate eligible for fellowship has to pass both parts of the assessment with ≥ 35 passing marks each.
The Fee
The administrational fee for the assessment is 480€ plus all potential bank transfer charges. The payment must be remitted only by bank transfer (no cheques, no cash, no credit cards) to the account of European Board of Oro-Maxillo-Facial Surgery. The candidate’s name must clearly appear with the payment.
Should the candidate fail the C.V./Logbook Assessment, she/he will have a chance to re-apply for the next RQ Assessment without any further costs.
If the candidate passes step 1 (CV and Log-book) and, for unexpected reasons cannot participate step 2, she/he is allowed to re-apply once for the next step 2 without payment. The score of step 1 will be valid through the next session.
If the candidate passes step 1 and fails step 2 she/he is allowed to re-apply once for the next step 2 with payment of 300€. The score of step 1 will be valid through the next session.
